"You never listened to your amma, but she was right

about the myriad benefits of turmeric. Now the powers
that be are saying it too.

A recent study at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson
Cancer Center shows that curcumin, which is the main
ingredient of turmeric and the compound that gives curry its
mustard-yellow color, halts the spread of breast cancer in mice.
The spice seems to shut down a protein that is active in the
spread of breast cancer. Though the study results are early,
researchers found that the nontoxic natural substance not only
repelled progression of the disease to the lungs, but also
appeared to reverse the effects of paclitaxel, a commonly
prescribed chemotherapy for breast cancer that may trigger
spread of the disease with use over a long period of time.

“We are excited about the results of the study and the possible
implications for taking the findings into the clinic in the next
several years,” says Bharat Aggarwal, Ph.D., professor of cancer
medicine in M. D.Anderson’s Department of Experimental
Therapeutics.

Meanwhile, you can’t go wrong currying favor with turmeric.
So eat your curry!"

Ahhhh, so.........

A couple go for a meal at a Chinese Restaurant and order
the "Chicken Surprise". The waiter brings the meal, served
in a lidded cast iron pot. Just as the wife is about to serve herself,
the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little
eyes looking around before the lid slams back down.

"Good grief, did you see that?" she asks her husband.

He hasn't, so she asks him to look in the pot. He reaches for it and
again the lid rises, and he sees two little eyes looking around before
it slams down. Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what
is happening, and demands an explanation.

"Please sir," says the waiter, "what you order?"

The husband replies, "Chicken Surprise."

Three for three

Just another odd ending to the old year...
The first surprise was when three Warrenton sisters discovered
they were pregnant and due around the same time.
But the bigger surprise came last week when their babies —
Sophia, Jack and Kara — were born on three consecutive days at the

same hospital in the St. Louis suburb of St. Charles

"I've had sisters deliver within a week or so of each other, but nothing
like this," said Dr. Evelyne Schuetz, who monitored the sisters' pregnancies.

Her medical partner offered to deliver the third, but Schuetz said no way.
"I said, 'I've delivered the two, I have to deliver the third.'

Tracey Mueller, 28, was the first to give birth; daughter Sophia Ann
Mueller arrived at 7:07 a.m. on Dec. 28.
Labor pains next struck Trisha Duvel, 31, who delivered Jack Thomas
Duvel at 9:39 p.m. on Dec. 29.
The next morning, Jamie Roden, 24, started feeling queasy. She checked
into St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles in the afternoon, and Kara Grace
Roden arrived at 9:23 p.m.

Permission to drink at work

While most companies refrain from allowing consumption
of alcohol on the premises, there are some good arguments
for changing that policy.
Reasons for allowing drinking at work include:
1. It's an incentive to show up.
2. It reduces stress.
3. It leads to more honest communications.
4. It reduces complaints about low pay.
5. It cuts down on time off because you can work with a hangover.
6. Employees tell management what they think, not what
management wants to hear.
7. It helps save on heating costs in the winter.
8. It encourages carpooling.
9. Increases job satisfaction because if you have a bad job you don't care.
10. It eliminates vacations because people would rather come to work.
11. It makes fellow employees look better.
12. It makes the cafeteria food taste better.
13. Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are wasted.
14. Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable.
15. Suddenly, farting during a meeting isn't so embarrassing.
16. No one will remember your strip act at the Christmas Party.

A local man was rushed to hospital last night after sniffing
Curry powder. Hospital spokesman said he is in a korma.

2006 : The fun begins

Arkansas Bar Gal
A cowgirl, who is visiting Texas from Arkansas, walks into a bar
and orders three mugs of Bud. She sits in the back of the room,
drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When she finishes them,
she comes back to the bar and orders three more.

The bartender approaches and tells the cowgirl, "You know, a mug
goes flat after I draw it. It would taste better if you bought one at a time."

The cowgirl replies, "Well, you see, I have two sisters. One is in Australia,
the other is in Dublin. When we all left our home in Arkansas, we promised
that we'd drink this way to remember the days when we drank together.
So I'm drinking one beer for each of my sisters and one for myself."

The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there.

The cowgirl becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way.
She orders three mugs and drinks them in turn. One day, she comes in and
only orders two mugs. All the regulars take notice and fall silent. When she
comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, "I don't want
to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss."

The cowgirl looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns in her eyes
and she laughs. "Oh, no, everybody's just fine," she explains," It's just that my
husband and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking.
Hasn't affected my sisters though!"

Road trip
Four women were driving across the country. Each one was from a different
state: Idaho, Iowa, Nevada and California. Shortly after the trip began, the
woman from Idaho started pulling potatoes from her bag and throwing them
out of the window.

"What the heck are you doing?" demanded the Nebraskan.

"We have so many of these darn things in Idaho, I am just sick of looking at them!"

A moment later, the gal from Iowa began pulling ears of corn from her bag and
tossing them from the window.

"What are you doing that for?" asked the gal from California. "We have so many
of these things in Iowa, I am just sick of looking at them!"

Inspired, the gal from Nevada opened the car door and pushed the Californian out.

Still in shock from 2005

Yes, I'm recovering from the year before but I should be back
to my usual posts after the traumatic, shocking disruptions
of 2005. Think Unemployment, Hurricanes, Evacuation
Automobile failure and financial nosedives followed by a
general lethargy... 2005 was a &^#$$&*&!!^ mess !!
