female and a Madrasi Male. But almost everything else about my
upbringing and life in India has been Anglo-Indian : school, church,
best friends, girlfriend, etc. The best times of my life have been in the
company of Anglo-Indians, to the extent that I visited
India after an absence of over twenty years solely for the purpose of
being the Best Man at my Anglo-Indian friend Russell Newby's wedding
to my Anglo-Indian cousin, Marilyn Miller.
So naturally with this background the cuisine I crave is the Anglo-Indian type.
Now that I'm in the USA, there are plenty of Indians and Indian grocery stores
and restaurants that ensure my taste for Indian food stays intact. But like the
Jews of Indian descent, the Anglo-Indians are an almost invisible, slowly
declining group and so is their wonderful cooking tradition. How nice then,
to find the 'real deal' in Bridget Kumar an A-I ( the common abbreviation
for 'Anglo-Indians' ) who so generously and skilfully shares her knowledge

Speaking of Anglo-Indians, there are attempts to keep their lively
tradition and culture alive in the form of regular and well-organized
