Love Thy Neighbor

How did a Protestant Christian schoolboy like myself in Pune, India
wake up to the 5:30 a.m. sounds of the Islam call to prayer at the Mosque
on his street, say 'Good Morning' in English to his Buddhist Jain neighbors
heading to their temple rituals, greet his Roman Catholic friends walking
away from Matins at the Catholic Church - facing the Mosque - even as
he heads off to start his school day with General Assembly, where boys
of all religions sing Anglican Church Hymns and recite Christian prayers ?
The answer, quite simply, is that I just did it without worrying if anyone's
daily Religious ritual was disturbing any of the folks in the area.
The piercing, amplified voice of the man making that call to prayer in
the Mosque, followed by the Church bell tolling for Mass, with the background
clanging of the Hindu temple bells adding to the rising cacophony of
A.M. Radio stations, Automobiles, Street vendors, dogs, etc. were just normal
everyday beginnings to our day. No big deal.

The Mosque was the first thing that I saw when I stepped out into the street.
If I turned my head left, there was St. Xavier's Church. Turn right, and there
was the shrine of Baba Jan, a tiny lady whose devotees from all faiths
nodded their heads in respect as they hurried past each day.....all free to
openly pray to the God of their faith, on my street, whenever they chose.
That's what India has always been like and still is, for the most part - willing
to put aside religious differences and live peacefully and respectfully alongside
each other.

But that was Pune, India and I was a mere schoolboy. Now, as the sun sets in
Houston, Texas I am a man reflecting on how different things are in America
for people of various beliefs, attitudes and feelings toward their surroundings.
Americans come in all stripes and colors, and from every nation under the sun.
They follow - or don't - whatever or whomever they choose to. The difference
here is that there are those who wish to neither see nor hear nor have anything
to do with anyone they believe doesn't belong 'in their own backyard'.
That willingness to just live and let live, to just get along with others regardless
of Race, Religion or skin color always seems to come at the cost of divided feelings,
open anger and outrage. The efforts to create a mixed society are there, and there
is definitely improvement in that arena. But the earliest primal instincts, that of
the all-powerful land-owner/ruler are ever-present, and at the root of most
discordant situations. Below are two current instances where Religion, Politics and
remedies are at the forefront.

The Way of the (Controversial) Cross
The Way of the (Controversial) Cross
Everything's bigger in Texas, like my Flickr capture of a huge Cross that
made many area residents 'cross' when the Sagemont Church opened.
One year later, the Cross still dwarfs everything for miles around, and rightly so -
it's as tall as the Empire State Building !
See what all the fuss was about here

Elsewhere, in the city of La Marque, in Galveston County, Texas :
' Masjid Al-Fattah will become the first permanent mosque in the county’s mainland.
There are no large domes or minarets to embellish this mosque, a gray metal building
surrounded by a cyclone fence. '

La Marque is where I got lost while driving one day, and my hesitant driving prompted
a Patrolman in a squad car to follow me closely all the way back to the freeway.
I obviously didn't belong in his town.......and I didn't want to. This place is part of the
Bible Belt defined. And yet one of their long-time residents, Abdul-Rahman Salahuddin
president of the Islamic League of America, is the one who got the go-ahead for
construction of this Mosque. I think that is beyond admirable, both on the part of the city
and the modest Mr. Salahuddin, who expects the mosque to be ready n three weeks.

Troma On My Mind

Spreading the word is better than doing nothing at all.

It's turning into one of those 'Toxie' Troma films, where
an innocent guy "lands in a drum of toxic waste, which
immediately causes severe burns and disfigurement. Despite
the burning chemicals even causing him to burst into flames,
Melvin survives, and stumbles home. Drawing a bath to try
and scrub some of the chemical residue from his horribly
scarred flesh, Melvin begins his transformation into a
hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength."

I have visions of Katrina Refugees meet Hurricane Ike
survivors meet The Creature From the Black Lagoon
meets The Swamp Thing meets Toxie. If ONE person falls
into the murky waters of the oil spill, if would-be rescuers
get contaminated....they would have to be quarantined,
assuming they could breathe for a few precious moments.
There may even be those who refuse to be treated and
rescued by a Government they lost faith in a long time ago.
Yes, those who choose to ride out this crisis by staying put are
beginning to look a lot like Mutants out of a post-Apocalyptic
B-movie horror-Sci-Fi flick to me. Evacuation time.....

Survivors in the ravaged areas ? Slim chance, whether
they be humans, animals, birds, marine or plant life forms.

Evacuees ? Houston Texas welcomed similar unfortunates
5 years ago. Many relocated and managed to use their Refugee
status to receive housing assistance and employment, albeit
at the cost of unemployed Houstonians who tightened their
belts and accepted the good with the bad. As Hotel Occupancy
rates and new home sales rose, so did the Crime rate.
And now in the current economic climate as all states in the
nation face new challenges by the day, this biggest challenge
of all is the one created by the Deepwater Horizon/BP

Lost jobs ? As a result of Gulf Coast fishermen losing their
livelihood, fresh Seafood will become a rarity on the Menu.
The scarcity will lead to a rise in prices. Those desperate and
unemployed persons will be forced to seek employment out
of state.... starting with neighboring Houston, the 4th largest
city in the USA. With NASA already facing an enormous loss
of jobs, and the United-Continental Airlines merger, the
scramble for employment in Texas will be downright scary.
Good luck to the Graduating Class of 2010.

I can't say what will happen if another Katrina-sized
Hurricane sweeps across New Orleans and submerges it
yet again before it heads to who know where, but I know I
haven't watched one too many Sci-Fi flicks as some of my
friends suggest. I never was a crazy Sci-Fi fan and if it wasn't
for the excellent imagery I wouldn't have liked 'Avatar' all
that much. What ? There was more to it than digital trickery ?
Yes, it was a tale of Greed, survival, Romance and Action
and really neat gizmos which we've never seen before. True,
but it didn't qualify as the greatest movie ever made, at least
not in my book. I walked out of the first Star Wars movie to
leisurely smoke a cigarette and use the Restroom. I'm weird
like that.

Anyway, the point here is that I am not a crazy voice crying
in the wilderness. This time there are myriad voices being
raised and they will not be stilled, rather the numbers will
increase as supporters from outside the United States join
the cry for the safety of our Environment. Look out for
mutants and toxic avengers alike.....

Listen to the legendary Jean-Michel Cousteau who
says this is like the Exxon Valdez occurring every
three days. He knows. He was there, 21 years ago.

Mother's Day and Ever After

I held off till midnight the day after so you could perhaps understand
better why this day is not quite like the Mother's Day you have come to expect.
Everyday is Mother's Day for this son who lost his mom at the age of five.

Go ahead, appreciate
celebrate
this glorious date
for your Father's mate,

but try to relate
to the words I now state
before it's too late -
for this is my fate.

The Mother I so cherish
did all too soon perish
in front of our eyes.
These are not lies.

We heard her last cry
my sisters and I
tried to wipe our eyes dry,
still wet though we try
we can't say Goodbye.

Forever I must live
with those memories of old -
and why not, for to me
they're more precious than Gold.

What I relate to you now
is what's rarely been told.
Until now, getting older
and increasingly bold.

That night we never slept.
In her dying arms we wept
unable to help - we were terribly young,
and awfully inept !

We were three siblings and Dad
round her bed, beyond sad.
Thoughts of days we once had
left us shaken, half-mad.

Sheila coughed as she bled
her last moments in bed
while her eyes on us fed
one last time.

All too soon, we were torn
from her love. We were shocked
suddenly less-cared for,
unwillingly unlocked
from her tender and warm,
always-gentle embrace
with nothing and no one
to stand in her place.

Or so it seemed.......

For there were angels around
though we never did know.
On that night we were too busy
letting all our tears flow.

Three sisters, three women
with no kids of their own
took us in, and adopted us.....
now see how we've grown !

The three women were Winifred, Victoria and Charity Miller, but I
always like to think of them as Faith, Hope and Charity because they
certainly exemplified those qualities. I recently celebrated their role in
my life in a blogpost dated March 7, 2010

Elegy for an Undead Person of Interest

This is for Firoze Shakir, the noted Sufi-inspired Poet, Blogger,

Flogger (yes, he flogs himself) and Pho-togger of the dark
side of Humanity. The one who unerringly refers to himself
as 'Bollywood's Most Wanted' and 'Photographer No.1'.
As he approaches the sixth decade of his life he has begun to
increasingly ponder on that extraordinary life and what it
might mean if he is gone and forgotten by all including the
media and his long list of followers and friends on the Social
Networks he haunts at all hours. I responded via email that I
would make sure that didn't happen, because I was in the
process of gathering my thoughts in order to write him a fitting
eulogy, one that he could appreciate while he was still alive.
Here's what came out of that promise.........

Let no man write the Epitaph
of the man who lived to Photograph.
Except me, maybe.

Endless Comments of praise
lengthy Poems of Pain
from a tireless body
and an untiring brain.

Firoze slept with one eye
as the other one scanned
his photos of victims -
the downtrodden, the damned,
the rich man, the beggar
Transgenders and Gays -
no one escaped
his unyielding gaze.

From Bandstand, in Bandra
to Borivli and Thar
he loitered and lingered
in Andheri and Khar
to make himself welcome,
to shoot pictures unharmed
Firoze traveled through Mumbai
as many he charmed.

With feet void of footwear -
often bleeding and cut,
boldly he entered
a Mosque, Church or hut
with simple intentions of showing the truth
of lives all around him,
be they smooth or uncouth.

The orphans, the children
he cried for each time
his lens perpetrated
the scene of that crime
where Padres and sinners,
fanatics in trance
played out life as his camera
recorded their dance.....

the dance for the Prophet -
this follower bled,
piercing body and soul,
even cutting his head
as a symbol of Faith,
as a means to an end
seeking justice for all -
a kind-hearted friend.

On Vox and on Twitter
his words still resound,
on Facebook and Flickr
his pictures astound
those without eyes
and those without ears
who spit out their secrets,
but rarely their fears.

So was it all worth it,
this endless crusade
to educate, enlighten ?
This Tailor by trade

was a Poet by calling -
superb lensman, no doubt.
We would err by forgetting
him. Over and out.

The Original Avatar from Pune

Hazarat Babajan Pune India

What shall I say of the Hazarat Baba Jan shrine and the
atmosphere, the magic of it all ? The Char Bawdi area
where I grew up, 2 minutes away from my home, the same
place where Avatar Meher Baba decided to become a
disciple of the lady who set him on his life's great journey ?
Gift of Love: Sayings and Messages of Avatar Meher Baba

My thanks to Jitendra, a Flickr friend who recently shared
this pic/gift (Click the link) when I spoke of a yearning to see
this special shrine one more time. The place where I stood and
stared, danced with whirling, piercing, bleeding, entranced
dervishes who flogged themselves so forcefully that the scene
took root in my brain and I just had to go home and try to flog
myself with a belt. True story. Ouch ! I gave up within a few
days.....

On Ash Wednesdays and throughout Lent I would stop by and
smear ash on my forehead from a bowl that rested at the entrance.
The thick pungent aroma of Incense was overwhelming and blinding
but the ash was all-important to me back then, for it served as
physical 'proof' for my Christian family to see and approve that yes,
I had been to Church (which I hadn't). I saw no wrongdoing
in my trickery since I believed that the ashes were holy anyway
as witness the number of devotees from different faiths who
stopped by at all hours to pay respect. I respected that.
Such is the power of Baba Jan. Read and appreciate what this
all means to people around the world :
but don't take my word for it. How about a Celeb's devotion ?

Hotness and What-not -ness

Call it Synchronicity or auto-sync or co-inky-dink or whatever
you want to call it when random events re-occur inexplicably in an
almost-connected sequence within a short period of time.
I experience this a lot, so much so that sometimes it seems to me
that I may have been touched by an Angel. But probably not.....
today, it's more likely I've been touched by a Bhut. *

March 25: I was watching the local Houston Fox News station
when I heard them mention Bhut, the world's hottest Chili Pepper.
I was thinking, yeah..... I'm in Texas, where they love their hot
and spicy Chili bowls as much as their flamin' hot Barbecue Wings
and Baby Back Ribs. But this Bhut doesn't come from Texas or
nearby Mexico, where they pride themselves on their production
and exports of Jalapenos and Habaneros. No, this red-hot Chili
Pepper that's hot as Hell thrives in the Indian subcontinent regions
of Manipur, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and each region
wants to lay their claim to fame as if they owned the copyrights to
this red devil from the Plant Genus Capsicum.

But on with my synch-ed story......March 26, the next day, and my
nephew with the 'Superman' avatar sends out a Facebook message :

' Trying to get my hands on bhut chili.....Does anyone know
where I can get a hold of one of these peppers? '

' Hey ! Now that's odd......maybe he was watching the news
at the same time as I was', I said to myself.  I had no answer for
him as I saw subsequent messages saying he wanted to eat it and grow it.
Hmmm... I decided I had to find the source for Bhut in Texas so I could
watch him suffer. But before I got to my Googling for the day, three days
passed and then.....March 29.

I was killing time before the afternoon shift by watching the Travel Channel,

and there it was again....on the program called 'Extreme Destinations',
a segment featuring the TV host in the act of taking on one of the greatest
challenges he had ever faced : the Four Horsemen Burger which contains
four of the hottest chili peppers known to man, including the Bhut !
It's stupid, it's dangerous, it's excruciating and it's an insane San Antonio,
Texas thang, as extreme as they come.

* In Hindi, the word 'Bhoot' means 'Ghost' ; Western researchers have
made the error of identifying the Bhut pepper as the 'Ghost pepper', fancifully
associating it with the Devil and the hottest destination you never want to visit,
Hell. This is a matter of controversy and opinion for the proud growers of
Bhut in the Indian subcontinent according to wikipedia.

Bombay Tadka Comes to Clear Lake Texas

Down-home cooking. Old Country flavor.
Comforting words to those who yearn for the way food tasted when they
were growing up on Mom's cooking.......or eating at Mom's favorite restaurant.

America, the 'Melting Pot' for immigrants like the Poles, Italians, Cubans,
Germans, Mexicans, Vietnamese, Chinese and just about everyone else, has
plenty of restaurants that successfully replicate the 'old country' flavor.
Not so in my Clear Lake neighborhood of NASA Mission Control HQ.
And so unashamedly I repeat the hackneyed statement yet again,
"Houston, we have a problem !"

After moving to Friendswood, Texas from India via New York/New Jersey
many years ago, I sadly discovered the void that exists for lovers of true Indian
Cuisine in Clear Lake. There are a few restaurants that serve a Lunchtime
Buffet acceptable to NASA-area residents, but while they all seem to employ
experienced Chefs, the end result of their creations is often erratic - far from
what Indian expats expect when it comes to 'old country' taste.

Annapurna (South Indian) started out great and then fizzled out, just like so
many before them who suffered growing pains. They began serving authentic
but stale food - a sure sign of approaching failure. They tried to survive change
of ownership and desperately began employing their younger family members,
who did their school assignments in between waiting tables, a common practice
in many family-owned businesses. While these zealous youngsters struggled for
their pocket money, they ultimately contributed to diminished customer service
and declining loyalty from die-hard well-wishers (like myself, above right)
who clung on until the day they disappeared from the 411 Directory.

A few eateries like Cuisine of India and Shalimar now carry on, serving as
they please, believing they are incomparable and have no existing competition.
Cleanliness and Decor are not a priority, as a single trip to their Washrooms
will prove. More than one such place features Giant-screen TVs blasting Indo-Pak
News, Cricket matches and Bollywood videos as a diversion for customers
who patiently wait for what they hope will be a taste of 'home cooking'.
Well, they might be in for a rude awakening shortly, because there's a younger,
newer kid on the block, and this time I was actually impressed with almost
everything I experienced there !

I'm speaking of Bombay Tadka Bar and Restaurant on Hwy 3 in Webster.
Located in the old Alpine Brauhaus, they have emerged as a genuine, quality
establishment on all counts. The menu here is as plentiful and varied as that of
any Mumbai (formerly Bombay) Fusion eatery, and appropriately priced.
The service staff is a mix of mellow fellows and females who blend in smoothly
with the ambient Fusion Decor - huge sepia-toned images of old Bombay
on one wall while on the other wall are glitzy glamor shots of Bollywood
movie idols.

Bollywood Wall Decor at Bombay Tadka -2

The overall Rust/wooden tones make for a somewhat subdued but warm
and ambient Bar area, situated facing the dining room.

I enjoyed a tasty Masala Dosa* for Dinner since I had my fill of a Mutton Biryani
platter the  day before at Sheik Chilli's in Houston, while my nephew had a
delicious  Lamb Biryani** that failed somewhat, but only because it was lacking
on the Lamb quantity included. But it was the only thing that was disappointing,
since our Dessert choices of Ras Malai, Pista Kulfi  and Masala Chai definitely
lived up to our expectations. The patrons were mostly Indian and their satisfied
faces bode well for the future of this place.

Now if only the owners don't lose their vision and focus on becoming a longtime
landmark instead of turning into take-the-money-and-run investors, I believe we'll
have a one-of-a-kind Indian Restaurant in the Houston/Clear Lake area.

Here's wishing loads of luck to the folks at Bombay Tadka Bar and Restaurant
