Honor Your Mother

Dear Fred,

Every year, 10 million mothers lose a child under the age of 5
to a completely preventable disease. This Mother's Day, you
have an opportunity to give these mothers, and yours,
a special gift.

Just this morning Congress introduced the U.S. Commitment
to Global Child Survival Act. It will provide resources for simple
and cost effective tools to save the lives of the 30,000 children
who die each day from treatable infections, waterborne illness,
malnutrition, and the half a million mothers who die from
complications in childbirth.

1. Today, you can honor mothers around the world by sending
a letter to your members of Congress asking them to support
the Global Child Survival Act.

2. Then send a special ONE Mother's Day greeting to let mothers
know you did this in their honor

Sponsored by Representatives Betty McCollum (D-MN) and
Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and
Gordon Smith (R-OR), the act sets realistic and effective guidelines
for child survival programs and quadruples funding for these programs
over the next three years.

This bill doesn't just save lives; it empowers mothers to provide for
their children so they can safely give their children the gift of life.

Write your member of Congress and encourage them to support
the Global Child Survival Act and send a ONE Mother's Day card.

The scale of America's response to this great tragedy has been woefully
inadequate, but we have the power to save lives if we take action
today on behalf of mothers around the world.

Happy Mother's Day,

in memory of Pantera guitarist 'Dimebag' Darrell
coupled with a live auction of guitars painted by some
of the leading Metal guitarists of today. Great artwork and

to children in public schools.

Sole Rebels For a New Ethiopia

When I was an adolescent, I had an Uncle who was
Headmaster at Medhane Alem school in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia,
during the reign of the greatly admired
Emperor Haile Selassie. This uncle filled my ears with
wonderful stories of this part of the 'Dark Continent', leaving
me fascinated and in love with a place I longed to visit.

Then along came the AIDS epidemic, Poverty, War and
Famine -and Live Aid- and my notions of Ethiopia were
not as fanciful, but more mindful of the human condition.

Somehow out of all that misery, some of my Uncle's students
survived, went out into the world and seized the first
opportunity to make a better life. I ran into a few of those
students in different parts of America purely by chance,
as if it was their destiny to retell the story of happier days
They regarded him as a legend of sorts, for here was an Indian
from Mumbai, befriended by an Emperor with majestic visions
and plans for Ethiopia.

One Ethiopian who is making a better place for his countrymen
is Kiru Alemu, whom I read about in an excellent article by the
brilliant Sarah Rich, Managing editor of WorldChanging.com
Alemu from Addis Ababa is poised to introduce the world to his
Sole Rebels
, footwear

from tire rubber soles, the kind of footwear seen on the feet of
soldiers and rebels in the poorest parts of the world, and
Urban Outfitters in the USA and Europe are to be
applauded for envisioning this as the next big thing for eco-conscious
individuals.

Quote from
http://www.murketing.com/journal/?cat=20
"
This will be the first time any Ethiopian firm has shipped footwear to
the United States, and the first time an Ethiopian firm has
shipped
DIRECT (no middleman) to a major US retailer.”

Lone Star State Delivery

Dear Texan ONE Members,

Today, you, me, and every other Texan has a unique opportunity to
help fight poverty.

My sister Krishna and I at the Houston ONE training

On Wednesday, as part of a trip to Washington, D.C., I will stop
by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson's office to try and convince
her to sponsor of the Global Resources and Opportunities for
Women to Thrive Act (GROWTH Act)
, which changes U.S.
international assistance and trade programs to prioritize the economic
opportunities of women living in poverty worldwide.

I hope that you will support me in this effort by writing a letter to
Senator Hutchinson encouraging her to support the GROWTH Act.

If you send a letter today, I will hand deliver your letter to her
Washington office this Wednesday
along with the message that Texans
are serious about ending poverty. If you join me in this endeavor, I am
certain we can convince Senator Hutchinson to sponsor this important
legislation.

The innovative provisions of the GROWTH Act remove a range of barriers
that prevent women from participating in their countries' economies.
Research shows that empowering women in the developing world is one
of the best ways to fight poverty. Not only does it improve their lives,
but their children are more likely to live longer and receive an education.

Please join me in urging Senator Hutchinson to fight extreme poverty
by sponsoring the GROWTH Act.

Thank you for your support,

Paresh Patel, ONE member

A TOPLESS car wash in Brisbane has been cleared for operation after authorities found no laws or water restrictions were being broken.

Strip club entrepreneur Warren Armstrong has set up Bubbles 'n' Babes at Albion in the city's inner north.

The business offers a $55 car wash by a topless woman, and a $100 wash by a totally nude female attendant – which includes an X-rated show.

I got my first computer in 2000 and since then I have
thrown away at least three monitors, which means
my
average is one every two years. I admit feeling
guilty
about it since I know there are creative Third World
people who work
all kinds of miracles in the recycling arena.
People like
Mary Tiong, an enterprising and amazing
lady who started from scratch and rose from the heaps
to monitor ( pun purely coincidental) the world's scrap

heaps, not just for profit but also for charity.

Real Mumbai Traffic

Somewhere in Chembur, Mumbai there is a missing driver
who decided to abandoned his vehicle in the middle of a busy
roadway.
Not just any old vehicle, mind you.....
He abandoned a Boeing 737 !

According to Monica Chadha of the BBC News, Mumbai :
' Some locals are angry that no action is being taken to move
the plane. Others say it is a tourist attraction. '

That Old Black Magic

From Reuters via Yahoo Odd News :
' Belief in black magic is common in some parts of
rural India, despite the country's robust economic
growth and cutting-edge high-technology industries.
Dozens of women are murdered each year after being
accused of witchcraft. '

A gruesome tale of an elderly couple being burned alive
has just surfaced from the city of Hyderabad but I'll just let
you decide if you wish to read the rest of this story here.

I wish someday to see the Yahoo news from India appear less
frequently in the Odd News section and more in the main section.
It's becoming like the stereotypical images of India as seen in
the media : Tigers, the Taj Mahal, a Sadhu or a smiling Hindu
woman with a red dot on her forehead and a nose ring......
