Anoushka Shankar & Karsh Kale Celebration

Anoushka Shankar graciously replied to a recent
e-mail I sent her so in the same spirit I would like
to graciously pass on the Bulletin she
has posted on
MySpace.
I told her I dreamed of her
collaborating
with her sister Norah Jones and
father Ravi Shankar,
but turns out they've already been there and
done that -
in a way. Read on.....

special guest deejay:
AL JACKSON
(Soul Children / Ju Ju)
This son of a jazz musician is dedicated to bridge the gap
between hip hop and jazz. His musical influences range
from Allen Jackson (dad) and John Coltrane to Pete Rock.
Al’s DJ career was launched in 1989 fueled by his passion
for collecting records and the desire to start an underground
dance club. Simply stated, he began deejaying because he got
tired of waiting in long lines and spending lots of money for
clubs that were not worth the price of admission.

In the year 2000, he was nominated
for a LA Weekly Music Award as the “Best Selector DJ” and
he was nominated for a NAACP Theater award in the
“Best Musical Score” category for the play “2G’S.” He won
the 2002 NAACP Theater Award for “Best Musical Score”
in the play “Weights.”
Currently, he has his own music production company called
“Sincerebeats.” Through his company Sincerebeats, Al has
released 2 DJ-mix CDs entitled L’automne and 2nd Quarter

ANOUSHKA SHANKAR & KARSH KALE
“Breathing Under Water”
Imagine living in a world where psychedelic raves follow classical recitals and rock and roll dives become Bollywood hangouts.
A world where one finds West Coast yogis immersed in Eastern culture and the New York underground drawing inspiration from the New Delhi club scene, where globalization is an internal state-of-being and borders were made to be crossed.
This is the world Anoushka Shankar and Karsh Kale live in and journey through. Breathing Under Water is the soundtrack of this journey as created by two of the most visionary talents pioneering the hip and fertile overlap of
today's world music scene.

Anoushka Shankar and Karsh Kale expand beyond cultural and traditional borders of music with their new collaboration. With the help of featured guests Ravi Shankar, Sting, Norah Jones, Midival Punditz, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt & others, the duo has succeeded in blending Indian classical, electronica, dance, and folk into a genre-hopping triumph.

Mukesh Ambani : Richer Than Everyone Else

I'm sharing this info only because he's an Indian.
That's the only thing we have in common.
( although he was born in Aden, Yemen says Wikipedia ).
Unless.....he wants to share the Love....of his Money.

In the meantime, now that he's on top of the world
he must find ways to match the pledges, donations
and contributions that his predecessors have in place.
That will make him truly worthy of our admiration.

' NEW DELHI: Billionaire Mukesh Ambani on Monday
became the richest person in the world, surpassing
American software czar Bill Gates, Mexican business
tycoon Carlos Slim Helu and famous investment guru
Warren Buffett, courtesy the bull run in the stock market.

Following a strong share price rally on in his three group
company, India's most valued firm Reliance Industries,
Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industrial
Infrastructure
Ltd, the net worth of Mukesh Ambani rose
to $63.2 billion (Rs 2,49,108 crore).

In comparison, the net worth of both Gates and Slim is
estimated to be slightly lower at around $62.29 billion each,
with Slim leading among the two by a narrow margin.'

ONE.org : Rev David Duncombe

Dear Fred,

For the last month, you and I have lived very different lives, but we both have worked for the same noble goal: canceling the debt of some of the world's poorest nations.

As Josh Peck mentioned in earlier emails, I left my home in Washington state and came to Washington, D.C., to fast for 40 days, all the while meeting with members of Congress and asking them to cosponsor the Jubilee Act. My thanks goes out to each and every one of you for joining me for the last four days of my fast to ratchet up the pressure on Congress.

Your efforts were extraordinary. Nearly 48,000 of you sent letters to your members of Congress, far surpassing my original hope for 40,000 letters, 1,000 for each day of my fast. Even more impressive are the 4,200 of you who picked up the phone and made a call to your senators and representatives. You wrapped all of this up by inundating the IMF with tens of thousands of emails demanding they follow through on their promise to cancel Liberia's debt.

And Congress heard you loud and clear.

Through our efforts we added 27 cosponsors in the House of Representatives, with over half of those signing on after ONE started taking action. We were also able to convince some of our champions in the Senate to introduce a companion bill, and so far 10 senators have agreed to cosponsor the bill. As if this were not enough, Congress agreed to hold a hearing on the Jubilee Act in mid November, drawing important attention to the need for debt relief.

Unfortunately, none of your members of Congress have signed on to co-sponsor the bill yet. They've received your letters, they've heard your calls, and they might even have received a visit from me, yet somehow they have not yet taken action.

Right now on the ONE Blog, representatives from ONE and Jubilee USA are discussing how we can keep up the pressure on members of Congress like yours. I hope that you will join this discussion to share your opinion and learn what you can do to build the momentum to see this crucial bill passed.

Once again, my deepest gratitude to you all, working together we have done a great thing.

In peace,

Rev. David Duncombe, ONE Member

Real Age: Work Buddies

Here's the Tip of the Day from

All About MEN: Work Buddies Can Be Life Savers
Are you a man with a never-satisfied boss, cranky
clients, and a mile-long to-do list?

Time for the buddy system. Constant job strain is a
major blood pressure booster in men (less so in women,
for some reason). But having a few hang-in-there cronies
helps offset the effect. Time for a group hug (or at least
lunch with your office favorites).
Gender Bender
In a study of white-collar workers, work stress had a
major impact on men's blood pressure, but it seemed to
have less impact on the blood pressure of women.
Regardless, male or female, the effect of job stress on
blood pressure was negligible when there were
commiserating coworkers around.

Are you stressed? Here are some common physical
symptoms.

Tame the Tension
Just like the daily grind of the office wears you down, the
constant force of high blood pressure against the walls of
your arteries can wear out their elasticity. The more
pressure, the faster the elastic goes. Not what you want,
because flexible arteries are less vulnerable to nicks, tears,
and other signs of wear that come with aging.

What's considered high blood pressure? Find out here.

Beat Stress on the Cheap
Just breathe right. Here's how.

RealAge Benefit
:
Keeping your blood pressure at
115/76 mm Hg can make your RealAge as much as 12 years
younger.

Salma the Muslim Barbie

There's a Barbie in every corner of the world these
days. Especially after one Indonesian Muslim mother
created a
Barbie that physically looks identical to the
American
original but with one major difference :
her attire.

Indonesian entrepreneur Sukmawati Suryaman has

created Salma the Muslim Barbie as a modest alternative
to all the beach-clad, Go-Go Barbies of the world by
covering her version from head to toe in traditional
Muslim garb. Smart woman that she is, she should see
rapid profits, with no opposition from overbearing
clerics such as the one who threatened Indian
Tennis sensation Sania Mirza

for displaying her undies and legs in traditional
Tennis wear. As expected, feverish Barbie collectors
and
Ebay resellers trying to cash in on this have flooded
the online store and so the website may be down.

No talk of a companion Ken
doll for the future, perhaps
due to all that
silly talk of Ken swinging the 'other' way.......

The Boss Bitching (NSFW)

Is your Boss driving you nuts with schemes, projects, pro-active
solutions and chatter
that doesn't gel with your workday ? Now there's
a place online to
share your stories and vent your frustrations !

Boss Bitching is a user-driven social content website that allows
anonymous postings
of stories about bosses. I would caution you
at the very outset that this is definitely Not Safe For Work, and
justifiably so. Proceed at your own risk !

Bosses have been neatly categorized into different types and chances
are you've had a few of the ones listed. Here's one of the tamer types:
Money Loving Name Dropper
'My boss came from modest beginnings but now makes a VERY good
living. She loves to brag about how much money she spends on her
daughter to all her employees who make only a tiny fraction of what
she makes.
Then she has the nerve to act like she understands ...'

Dale Watson : Living Legend

Artist: Dale Watson
Off the Album: From The Cradle To The Grave

This is a plug for a musician that blew me away when I saw him at the Continental Club in Austin, Texas almost ten years ago. Since then he's just been getting better, both as a performer and as a human being. After his girlfriend lost her life a car accident in 2000, his life turned bizarre enough that he admitted himself into a mental institution, had bouts of depression and insanity, attempted suicide using whiskey and pills, and sank to levels
that would have left most average folks dead. Yet the music remained vibrant and compelling.
This 2005 article at austin360.com offers a fascinating inside look into the life of this living legend and is a must-read on a literary, inspirational and musical level.

'Siddhartha' Revisited

'Siddhartha' (1972) filmed by Ingmar Bergman collaborator
Sven Nykvist, and written, produced and directed by
Conrad Rooks, tells the tale of
a young Indian who
embarks upon a journey to find the meaning of existence,
and is based on the 1921 cult novel by Hermann Hesse
.
Rarely seen until now, it is
a must-see for film-making
connoisseurs everywhere. However, it did earn its share of
Rotten Tomatoes.

Real Age Tips : How's Your Posture ?

How's Your Posture?
Want to feel good about your work, your family . . . yourself?
Try picking up that chin and pulling back those shoulders.
That's right -- carry yourself with confidence. Studies have
found
that people who consciously improve their posture
actually end
up improving their self-esteem. And it's one of
the keys to
living a 360-degree life. What's that, you ask?

Confidence Carry-Over
When you carry yourself with confidence, not only do you
feel better about yourself, but you make a better impression
on other people, too. You know, like that new boss you're
dying to impress.

The Surround-Sound Life
Another key to standing tall on life's tilt-a-wheel ride?
Living a balanced, 360° life, says Cathie Black, president
of Hearst Magazines and mom of two. That means maintaining
equilibrium between work and everything else. Sure, you can
constantly pull 80-hour work weeks, but you won't produce
your best stuff if you do. Spending time with family, meeting
new people, taking trips -- having a life outside the office --
is necessary in order to fuel your creative energies and
recharge yourself.

You also need to ask yourself what you want most out of life,
says Black -- not once, but often, because the person you are
at 21 is very different from the person you are at 35, 47, or 61.
Priorities, dreams, and goals change. Refocus and go after yours!

Learn more about getting ahead in work and life in
Black's new book.

well-being can make your RealAge up to 16 years younger.

Achatz and Alinea

Used to be, 'You've read the book, now see the movie'
but you just can't go by the book
** anymore. Not in the age
of YouTube, Stage 6 and MySpace. You can't sell
yourself enough without a bit of promo video. Just like having
a business without an online presence, your credibility is at
stake.

A current project has me reading about
publishing and
distribution of
Cookbooks here in the U.S. and so I found
myself entranced by the news that fabled Chef Achatz of
Alinea
Restaurant in Chicago has taken a rather novel -
pardon the pun - approach to promote
Alinea - the book.
Due out in the Fall of '08, this is no Chicken Soup For
The Whatever Ails You approach. No, he's taken the video
concept of marketing to a new level by presenting us with
the
Alinea Book Trailer from 2061wc on Vimeo.

** Well - you've seen the Trailer, now go buy the book !

P.S. Here's a decent review of Alinea before it worked its
way to the list of the Top 50 Restaurants in the world earlier
this year.

Blank Noise : An Update

Hello!
Here's a quick update on the Blank Noise front!
1.
We at Blank Noise are working on the blog and trying
to clean it up so that a first time visitor can easily
figure us out!

Your suggestions are welcome! If any of you with technical/
conceptual inputs would like to volunteer,
email us at
blurtblanknoise@gmail.com

2.
Amongst the last few posts has been the latest of our
online projects. called
'Tales of Love and Lust'. We asked
you to contribute things you have been called on the street
and have begun to compile a 'dictionary' of eve-teasing,
that defines what we are
not. The first set out is a list of
food names in the form of poster charts. They will be
translated in the local language and plastered around the
streets of your city.
If you would like to get this going by
volunteering to :

1. translate the text

2. organize printing ( figure out local printers/ cost/form a team/
delegate tasks/ locations for posters)

3. fund the campaign
4. post production/dissemnation paste posters, or organize-
email us at
blurtblanknoise@gmail.com

Coming up is a list of 'things'/ 'statements'/ descriptors
sent by all of you in response to
tales of love and lust.

3.
Ratna Apnender and Hemangini Gupta both members
of Blank Noise core team began something they've been
hoping to do for a while - critically question some of
Blank Noise's assumptions and examine the implications
of strategies. for instance, how is our perception of
harassment biased by the class and background of the
people involved? can approaching the police cause more
harm than good?
is a good response to harassment one
that adopts the same attitude and language of the
perpetrator in a give-back-as- good-as-you-get kind
of way?
Questions, thoughts and niggling doubts - they're all within
the last few posts and were specifically intended to get
us to talk about things that might have been bothering
many of us on these reader lists or who are volunteers.

Do drop by and add to the debate on
www.blanknoiseproject.blogspot.com thanks!

Toy Cars : Matchbox

Speaking of James Bond 007 a few days ago in relation
to the world's smallest camcorder got me surfing for the
Bond cars like the Aston Martin in 'Goldfinger',

the E-Type Jaguar

and the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow

Why ? Because I worked for Lesney Products USA in
Moonachie, New Jersey in the late '70s when their line of
Matchbox Toys was at the height of its popularity. The most
memorable part of my employment for Matchbox has to be
the free toys that we were allowed to help ourselves to for
giving away as Birthday, Christmas and other gifts. I amassed
a large and enviable collection of superb VWs, Jaguars,
T-Birds, etc. in the two years I was there and only recently
parted with the last of them, turning them over to my niece's
son. While surfing for Matchbox cars I discovered a whole world
of toy car collectibles and enthusiasts and signed a Guestbook
of a Pakistani enthusiast.

Message from Guestbook Owner:
Shabbir Malik's Personal Home Page
-----------------------
Thanks you very much for visiting my web site and then
taking the time to
sign my guest book. Please continue to visit
the site as I add/update
articles on a regular basis.
Also,
tell your friends about this site so that they can have
fun too. Remember
there is something for everyone including
Jokes, Matchbox Toys, History,
Pakistan, Riddles,
Romance and much
much more. Come visit it once and you
would be glad you did.

Dosa Man Gets the Silver Vendy !

Respect for the humble Dosa from the streets of New York !

Flickr Image by Zooey

Hundreds of New Yorkers paid $60 to eat - and vote - for
their favorite streetcorner cooks, and the proceeds of the event -
The Annual Vendy Awards - helped raise money for the
Street Vendor Project, a nonprofit organization that supports
the city's more than 10,000 sidewalk chefs. One of those chefs
was Sri Lankan
Thiru Kumar whose Dosas and other vegan
fare
nabbed the Top Prize, the Silver Vendy Cup this year.

Thiru Photo Credit: By Irene La Grasta

For the uninitiated, the dosai, dosa, dose, thosai, or dhosa is a
South Indian crêpe that is quite popular in many countries
outside of India. High in carbohydrates and proteins, it is a
centuries-
old typical South Indian breakfast item. Made from
a batter of lentils
and rice that has been left to ferment
overnight, it is spread into a
circular shape and fried in oil
or ghee. Etc., etc.... I'm no Thiru Kumar
so for a gander at the Wikibook Dosa recipe go here

Thiru's quite a guy. He has a strong fan base in
nearby NYU.
See him alongside this year's Street Vendor finalists here.

Then brace yourself and get adventurous. Go find a Dosa.
