I-Rock Hits Roadblock

Pune bands face Mumbai police chief's music
Pune, September 4: Mumbai’s showcase event of rock music —
Independence Rock or I-Rock — simply got grounded, about
half-an-hour before the bands went on stage. Seventeen bands
from all over the country, waiting to prove their mettle at the
Gateway of India this weekend, met a roadblock in the form of
Mumbai’s police commissioner AN Roy.

Organiser Farhad Wadia was extremely agitated, since he believes
that all the requisite permissions had been taken. ‘‘What happened
yesterday (Saturday) at the Gateway of India is a travesty and
mockery of fair play and justice in Mumbai. The commissioner of
police did not simply stop I-Rock, he basically told us that the police
will control what kind of music can be heard at the Gateway of India,
a monument that belongs to all Mumbaikars.’’
